In this volume, ASPECT once again explores new territory, entering a region so culturally conflicted that the very term "Middle East" is disputed as a holdover from colonialism. This issue presents nine artist's perspectives from both inside and outside of the region. Not only focused on the political, religious, and social dissent, these works ruminate on language, food, ritual, media, power, humor, and beauty.

The collection includes direct response to traditional statuary, works which relate technology to human experience and the natural world, exploration led by chance, community involvement, and works which reveal personal and cultural divides within public memory and architectural history.

Volume 12: Vital presents nine artists exploring that which is essential, grave, indispensable, and/or critical to existence. Mirroring preconceived notions of reality, these works re-imagine new deities, investigate animal nature and human desire, contemplate the body vs. the psyche, meditate on the circular nature of our existence, and in one case force us to witness the final minutes of life. We confront our own profound mortality, experience fear and displacement within a technological landscape, and consider the sustaining reciprocal relationship of artist and gallery.
