Para verte mejor

My work deals with the condition of woman in contemporary society, questioning her obsession with body image, beauty, and sexuality. My interest in this subject comes from growing up in Guatemala, a repressive, violent and sexist society.

With a minimalist approach, in these silent video-performances I play along with women’s beauty routines, performing them in exaggerated ways to reflect the pressures imposed by today’s society regarding her appearance. The camera focuses on the part of the body where the action takes place: With repetitive gestures, I apply makeup continuously for one and two hours, questioning our attraction to makeup and its power of seduction.
