Untitled, 2007 is a sequence of establishing shots taken from a series of nature programs produced for television. Their majestic perspective, the lack of visual signs of animal life and the smooth camera movements that carry us through the landscape as if floating in a capsule, like a visitor from another planet, convey a detachment from the environment, even at normal speed. Slowing the footage emphasizes these qualities but also reveals a strange audio track of unearthly sounds that make the scenes seem even more foreign and distance us further from the landscape. My interest in working with this footage is in observing the ways in which we learn to see and relate to the natural world through its mediated representation.
