Welcome to Suzhou is an interactive video installation, a moving landscape, interested in how we interact within a climate of socio-political disengagement. This piece is a reflection of oneself in the face of the other, with curiosity, and contingent on our participation.
By riding a bicycle in the gallery, the participant powers a video projection of bicyclists in Suzhou, China, that are riding directly toward the camera. The momentum of the rider controls the speed of the projection. This experience, without verbal communication and focused on sheer avoidance of collision, recognizes the reality of the US and Chinese relationship that’s headed straight into each other.
