33 Fiddles by Gwyan Rhabyt, 2007

33 Fiddles is an investigation of the rhythms of landscape. In the American West, these are experienced through the dominant human gesture on the rural hills – the country road – and through the corresponding cultural manifestation of Country and Western music, embodied particularly in the fiddle. Installed along a quarter mile of lonely rural road, thirty-three fiddle cases each contain a speaker simultaneously playing rhythmic overlays of fragmented Western Swing tunes. The sound swells and fades as the viewer walks between cases and as the wind sweeps the music across the hill.
